Quick Glance: Dorothy Pitman Hughes, a pioneering Black feminist and community organizer, died at the age of 84.
- Hughes, whose work has always been steeped in community engagement, established New York City's first refuge for battered women and co-founded the New York City Agency for Child Development to expand childcare facilities in the city.
- Hughes' community service was also recognized by Steinem.
- "My friend Dorothy Pitman Hughes ran a pioneering neighborhood childcare center on the west side of Manhattan," Steinem explained via email.
- At the center, she met Steinem, who was then a writer working on a piece for New York Magazine.
