Quick Glance: Biden pushes Congress to avert rail strike, citing catastrophic economic consequences
  • WASHINGTON, Nov 28 (Reuters) - The U.S. President Joe Biden of the United States called on Congress on Monday to intervene to avert a potential rail strike that could begin as early as December 9, warning of a catastrophic economic impact if railroad service was disrupted.

  • "A rail shutdown would devastate our economy," added Biden.

  • "congressional action to prevent a work stoppage in this manner is appropriate ... No one benefits from a rail work stoppage – not our customers, not rail employees and not the American economy." according to the Association of American Railroads. A rail labor stoppage helps no one, including our customers, rail employees, and the American economy."

  • Workers may strike or railways may lock out employees if they do not, unless Congress intervenes.

Quick Glance: Congress Moves to Avoid Rail Strike With Senate Vote
  • The law, which would compel a labor deal between rail firms and workers in the face of a strike, is now ready for President Biden to sign.

  • Mr. Biden had championed the negotiations that led to the provisional agreement, which his administration assisted in reaching under the Railway Labor Act, a 1926 statute that authorizes the president to interfere in rail labor disputes that threaten to disrupt important commerce or transportation service.

  • Some liberals, who were dissatisfied with the drive to impose the tentative deal on workers, thought that the paid leave provision championed by union workers was an essential addition.
