Quick Glance: US Tracking High Balloon over Midwest
  • The U.S. is tracking a high-altitude balloon over the Midwest, but it’s unclear if the balloon is a threat, officials said.

  • The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) stated that officials are tracking a small balloon at around 43,000 to 45,000 feet. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is also aiding in monitoring the balloon.

  • Last year’s Chinese spy balloon incident strained relations between the U.S. and China, which slightly improved after a meeting between President Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in November.

  • According to the Pentagon, the balloon, which is carrying sensors and surveillance equipment, is maneuverable and can change course.

  • According to the Pentagon and other US officials, the object is a Chinese spy balloon the size of three school buses moving east over America at an altitude of about 60,000 feet.

  • According to the Pentagon, the balloon poses no military threat and provides China with no additional surveillance capabilities beyond what it already has with spy satellites.

  • "I would much rather own a Chinese surveillance balloon than be cleaning one up over a 100-square-mile debris field," said Himes, a Democrat from Connecticut.
