Quick Glance: DNA Analysis Confirms Identity of Young Sailor from Virginia after Pearl Harbor Attack
- By utilizing DNA analysis, the remains of a 19-year-old sailor from Virginia, who died over 80 years ago in a World War II attack, have been identified.
- David Walker, hailing from Norfolk, Virginia, served as a Mess Attendant 3rd Class on the battleship USS California, which was docked at Pearl Harbor during the December 7, 1941 attack.
- Identification of Walker's remains was achieved through anthropological, dental, and mitochondrial DNA analysis conducted by the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System.
- Shortly after his death, Walker's mother requested a local reporter to publish Walker's photo in the newspaper to announce his death at Pearl Harbor. Before the sailor is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in September, a rosette will be placed next to his name at the Walls of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific.
