James Webb Telescope: A scientist explains its first images and how it ...
Quick Glance: NASA triumphantly unveils the complete set of Webb's initial photographs
  • Webb is the most powerful off-world observatory ever created, and it was built by NASA, Europe's space agencies, and Canada's space agencies. It is controversially named after a former NASA administrator.

  • Stephan's Quintet's interacting galaxies, as viewed by the Webb telescope 290 million light-years away from Earth.

  • Similar photos have been taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and other previous facilities, but they lack the sensitivity to see the most distant galaxies that Webb can view in large numbers.

  • Rieke explains that measuring redshifts for each gravitationally lensed galaxy will require more observations to determine how far back Webb has seen with the SMACS 0723 deep field.

NASA is planning to crash a spacecraft into an asteroid. Here's why
Quick Glance: NASA's spacecraft collides with an asteroid, passing a planetary defense test
  • Laurel, Maryland — NASA successfully crashed a small spacecraft into an asteroid on Monday, a 14,000-mile-per-hour collision aimed to see if such technology might be used to safeguard Earth from a potentially catastrophic hit.

  • It is in orbit around Didymos, a bigger asteroid.

  • A second spacecraft would be required to investigate the effect.

  • However, a moonlet, like as Dimorphos, orbits its larger sibling at a leisurely pace.

  • Indeed, only the larger asteroid, not Dimorphos, could be seen in the spacecraft's camera's live feed 90 minutes before impact.
