  • Born as Chad Rowan in Hawaii, Akebono rose to become one of the most successful sumo wrestlers in the 90s and was appointed as the 64th Yokozuna in 1993. After his active career, he pursued K-1 and wrestling.

  • The US Ambassador to Japan and the late musician Israel Kamakawiwoʻole honored Akebono as a giant in sumo and a bridge between the US and Japan. His legacy as a sumo icon lives on.

  • Israel Kamakawiwoʻole had sung about Akebono and other Hawaiian sumo wrestlers in his song 'Tengoku Kara Kaminari,' celebrating them as champions and heroes for all ages. Akebono leaves behind his wife, daughter, and two sons.
