US judge upholds Trump's $83.3 million defamation loss, rejects new trial
Quick Glance: Court Rejects Trump's Bid for New Trial Against E. Jean Carroll
  • A federal judge rejected former President Donald Trump’s request for a new trial—or to throw out the $83.3 million defamation ruling—against writer E. Jean Carroll, marking the latest legal loss for the former president.

  • In the Thursday ruling rejecting the request for a new trial or the judgment to be dismissed, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan said Trump’s argument was “without merit,” made “conspicuously without success” and “defies common sense.”

  • Robbie Kaplan, Carroll’s lawyer, told Forbes in a statement they are “pleased with though not surprised by” the court’s decision, adding the award was “entirely reasonable” because of Trump’s continued defamation, “hatred and disdain.”

  • In January, a jury determined Trump had to pay Carroll $83.3 million in damages after she accused him of sexual assault. Previously, another jury found Trump liable for sexual assault in the 1990s and subsequent defamation, ordering him to pay $5 million.

TikTok ban: ByteDance would rather shut app down than sell, insiders say
Quick Glance: TikTok Ban Threat: ByteDance Prefers Closure Over Sale, Insiders Say
  • ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, would prefer to shut down its loss-making app rather than sell it if all legal options to fight legislation to ban the platform from app stores in the US are exhausted, said four sources.

  • TikTok accounts for a small share of ByteDance’s total revenues and daily active users, so the parent would rather have the app shut down in the US in a worst-case scenario than sell it to a potential American buyer, they said.

  • ByteDance would not agree to sell one of its most valuable assets – its “secret source” – to rivals, said the four sources, referring to the TikTok algorithm.

  • After facing challenges regarding bans, the short-form video app has encountered partial and attempted prohibitions in the US and other nations.

AI could kill off most call centres, says Tata Consultancy Services head
Quick Glance: AI Revolutionizing Call Centers: TCS Insights
  • The head of Tata Consultancy Services predicts chatbots will reduce the need for human call center agents significantly, revolutionizing the industry.

  • TCS's generative AI projects have doubled in value to $900 million by March, highlighting the increasing demand for tech talent and the need for workforce training.

  • Reports suggest that overall IT services growth is affected by global uncertainties like inflation, war, and elections, leading to a decline in spending and slower revenue growth for companies like TCS and Infosys.

  • Infosys anticipates a modest 1-3% sales growth in the upcoming financial year due to customers delaying discretionary spending on new tech projects amidst the current economic climate.
