Turkey has formally applied for membership in the BRICS group, making it the first NATO country to do so.

The application was prompted by stalled negotiations regarding Turkey's EU membership.

President Erdogan stated that Turkey does not view BRICS as an alternative to other structures and remains an official EU candidate.

Erdogan is expected to attend the BRICS summit in October in Kazan to strengthen the group's position against the USA and the EU.
