Quick Glance: Court Ruling Favors Zuma Party
  • The ANC's attempt to remove the breakaway uMkhonto we Sizwe Party from the ballot for the national and provincial elections on 29 May was rejected by the Electoral Court.

  • Consequently, the party led by former ANC president Jacob Zuma will have the opportunity to participate in the elections, although it will encounter a separate legal challenge regarding the usage of the name MK at the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Wednesday.

  • The verdict signifies a significant victory for the emerging party and its advocates, with a portion of supporters congregating at the court premises awaiting the pronouncement of the judgment.

Zuma’s bid to force Downer’s removal dismissed
Quick Glance: Zuma Fails Again in Attempt to Remove Downer, Plans Appeal
  • Former president Jacob Zuma once more faced defeat in his efforts to have lead prosecutor advocate Billy Downer removed from his arms-deal corruption case.

  • During proceedings on Wednesday, Pietermaritzburg high court judge Nkosinathi Chili dismissed Zuma's request, citing insufficient evidence that Downer's involvement could violate Zuma's right to a fair trial.

  • Despite the unfavorable outcome, Zuma intends to lodge an appeal and suggests pausing the trial indefinitely to strategize the next steps.

  • Following Downer's insistence on setting trial dates promptly, both parties agreed to delay the trial until a 'pretrial conference' scheduled for May 17.
