Quick Glance: Last Survivor of USS Arizona from Pearl Harbor Attack Passes Away
- The final surviving member of the USS Arizona battleship that was destroyed during the Japanese assault on Pearl Harbor has passed away. Lou Conter had reached the age of 102.
- Conter passed away in his residence in Grass Valley, California as a result of congestive heart failure, as confirmed by his daughter, Louann Daley.
- In the attack of 1941 that propelled the United States into World War II, a total of 1,177 sailors and Marines lost their lives. Conter, who served as a quartermaster, was stationed on the main deck of the Arizona when Japanese aircraft flew above him on December 7 at 7:55 a.m.
- A bomb managed to pierce through the steel decks of the battleship 13 minutes into the assault, igniting more than 1 million pounds of gunpowder stored beneath it, causing the ship to be raised out of the water.
