Watch: Three bald eagles could hatch any day now: As a snowstorm approaches, eagle parents Jackie and Shadow will be keeping their eggs warm.
popsci.com/environment/bald-eagle-nest-livestream/
Quick Glance: Exciting: Bald Eagle Chicks Ready to Hatch Soon
- The spotlight is on two new avian internet sensations and their cozy residence in Southern California. A nest housing three bald eagle chicks is on the verge of hatching any day now from a Jeffrey pine tree overlooking Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino Mountains east of Los Angeles. Enthusiastic onlookers from near and far can tune in via a live stream provided by the nonprofit organization Friends of Big Bear Valley.
- In late January, a bald eagle named Jackie laid the eggs. Enduring a snowstorm in the region, she diligently incubated the eggs for over two and a half days, maintaining warmth for 61 hours and 58 minutes without respite. The responsibility of incubation was shared with their father, Shadow, who also ensured Jackie had an ample supply of fish.
- Measuring approximately five feet wide and deep, the nest offers a breathtaking vista of the lake and mountains. Biologists overseeing the situation are on the lookout for a 'pip', a visible bump or crack in the eggshell indicating imminent hatching. However, even with a 'pip', hatching may take at least a day, sometimes longer, for the chick to emerge.
- With another winter storm approaching the region, excitement and anticipation are mounting. A winter storm warning has been issued for Big Bear Lake from the evening of Friday, March 1, through the afternoon of Sunday, March 3. Due to the storm, hatching may occur off-camera as Jackie or Shadow will be stationed on the nest to shield the chicks from the inclement weather.
