Big, stinky blob of algae takes aim at Florida beaches. What's causing it? Is it climate change?
usatoday.com/story/news/2023/03/14/smelly-seaweed-sargassum-headed-toward-florida/11468969002/
Quick Glance: A massive blob of seaweed is on its way to Florida, complete with a foul stench.
- The Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt, as it is officially known, has become an annual, often stinky occurrence in recent years, swamping beaches and resorts from South Florida, through the Caribbean, and into the Gulf of Mexico with mats of the macroalgae, which then decomposes, releasing hydrogen sulfide.
- The warmer colors represent the most sargassum biomass.
- Though the seaweed mass forms in waters south of Florida, it will be carried north along Florida's east coast by Gulf Stream currents as it moves west into the Gulf of Mexico in the coming months.
- Wildlife can benefit from sargassum mats in the open ocean.
